Sostanza allo stato gassoso in grado di condensare per sola compressione; può svilupparsi da un liquido, per evaporazione o ebollizione (es. il v. acqueo ), oppure da un solido, per passaggio diretto (es. i v. di iodio , di mercurio ) ║ com. Il vapore acqueo ottenuto per evaporazione o ebollizione dell’acqua: il v. del brodo che bolle nella pentola ║(TECN). Con riferimento a macchine basate sullo sfruttamento dell’energia termica posseduta dal vapore acqueo: caldaia a v. macchina a v. locomotiva a v. ║(FIS). Cavallo v., vedi cavallo │(MAR). Nave a v.(o sempl. il vapore ), il piroscafo: l’arrivo del vapore │ A tutto v., con gran velocità │(GASTR).
